Saint Augustine of Hippo

Saint Augustine of Hippo

Bishop, Theologian • Doctor of the Church
Saint Augustine of Hippo was one of the greatest thinkers and teachers in the history of the Church. Born in 354 in Thagaste in North Africa, he spent his early years searching for truth before embracing the Christian faith through the prayers of his mother, Saint Monica, and the guidance of Saint Ambrose. He was baptised in Milan in 387, later became a priest and bishop of Hippo, and devoted his life to preaching, teaching and serving the Church. His writings, including Confessions and The City of God, have profoundly influenced Christian theology and spirituality. Augustine died in Hippo in 430 and is honoured as a Doctor of the Church and patron of theologians, philosophers and printers.
